Mudslides, close to home
Monday, 06 September 2010

Well, I am experiencing my first “rainy season” here in Guatemala. It rains almost everyday. The worst part about that is I miss seeing the sun! …oh yeah, and the towels don’t really dry out because of all the humidity. Other than that, it hasn’t been too bad. Recently however, all the rain has been the culprit of many mudslides. On Saturday, there were 2 fatal mudslides, both involving public transportation buses, leaving 38 dead and many more missing. On Friday driving home from language school, there was a small slide in which I had to drive through mud about 2 inches deep and dodge a fallen tree that was laying across the road. In addition to that, just down the road from my house there was a mudslide that destroyed about 30 ft. of the outer security wall of my community…it fell into the ravine below, along with a few trees. (Pictured) Please continue to pray for my safety! Psalm 46:1-2

First Visit from Family
Friday, 20 August 2010
Kurtis, Leah and Jacob have been here for 2 weeks! I have really, really enjoyed having them! In addition to enjoying their company, I have been able to facilitate opportunities for them to experience a variety of mission works. I praise the Lord how He is working in their lives toward some type of fulltime service. Yesterday we visited an orphanage in Sololá. While we were there we took advantage of seeing the near by attraction and world famous Lake Atitlan. They leave in 2 days, and I’m already dreading the good-byes. : (

Studying Spanish
Wednesday, 07 July 2010

The Christian Spanish Academy has a great environment in which to study. I receive one-on-one instruction from Silvia about 20 hours a week. She has been very patient with me, and more than that, I consider her a specific answer to prayer. After these first three weeks of studying, today I passed my first test! What a relief it is! Please pray for me as I continue to learn to speak the Spanish language fluidly.

Caya, a street dog
Saturday, 19 June 2010

I welcomed Caya into my home 3 weeks ago! It was the weekend of the eruption of Volcano Pacaya (hence her name). Mindy Kinman saw her curled up in a corner in front of our church in Sumpango one evening. The poor little street dog was malnourished, scrawny and full of flees and parasites with nappy hair. She was a pathetic sight…I’m not so sure what it was that caused Mindy to think of me…but I’m so glad she did! Caya weighed less than 2 pounds that night I took her to the vet. She is growing and becoming more healthy everyday. Bringing Caya off the street and giving her a home has been a great spiritual reminder for me of what Christ has done…giving me a home, a new name, a meaning to life, the opportunity to grow under His care. I’m not trying to make everything about this dog have a spiritual application…but for me, it has been a good reminder of who I am in Christ! Do you think there is a doggie heaven??? JUST KIDDING!!! : )
